TOP HONOURS FOR CITY OF LEEDS 28 Jul 2008
 Outstanding performances from Matthew Johnson
and Danielle Hall-Jackson, helped the City of Leeds
to  be named as the top club at this years asa
  National Age Group Championships.

Johnson concluded his 2008 asa National Age Group campaign with ten individual gold medals and three bronze medals from the team relays. Hall-Jackson picked up three age group titles in the 13-years category and two bronze medals in the team relays.

Dominating the boys 13-years age group, Matthew Johnson completed his asa National Age group Championships in 2008 with easy wins in the 200m breaststroke (2:30.63) and 400m freestyle where he set a new British age group record of 4:09.59 smashing the record by over three seconds. He finished the day by contributing to the team performance in the boys 4x200m freestyle relay where the City of Leeds team came third.
Summarising Matthew Johnson’s performances, Richard Denigan, head age group coach at the City of Leeds, said, “Matthew’s target was to win ten individual gold medals at these Championships. Some of his events have been close with Matthew being pushed by his competitors, but we expected that and prepared accordingly. He’s come along way twelve months and we are both very pleased that he has accomplished his goal. In training we have been focused upon pacing and learning to swim a controlled race. His swims have been more mature but at the end of the day this is all a learning experience for the future” concluded Denigan.

MBE delight for City of Leeds volunteer

Barbara Lancaster

City of Leeds Swim Club Supporters Committee Chair Barbara Lancaster has received an honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her invaluable contribution to sport over the years.

Barbara has been involved with the swimming club since the 1970’s when her daughter was competing at Leeds. She quickly became involved in the committee and the running of the club and became Chair of the supporters committee in 1978.

She worked as Team Manager for a club tour of China in 1988 and went on to become the first female national squad Team Manager in 1996. She worked with the teams at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics and the 1993 European Championships.

Babs as she is know is remembered fondly by swimmers on the squads and has enjoyed every moment of her career within swimming.

“I am absolutely overwhelmed to receive this award,” she said. “I’m amazed to get an MBE for doing something that has been so pleasurable for 32 years. I knew when I first sat watching my daughter swimming that I had to get involved with the sport and I have never regretted that decision.

“It has been lovely to get to know so many swimmers and watch them take their steps towards success. Swimming is very much a one to one sport and everyone involved knows how hard the athletes work towards their success.”
