Welcome to the Sharks, Sammy! To be selected for Team GB is an incredible achievement and a reflection of years of hard work, dedication and commitment. - [Passing of Barbara Lancaster](https://www.swimleeds.org.uk/passing-of-barbara-lancaster/): It is with great sadness that we learn of the passing of Barbara Lancaster MBE, a remarkable lady whose dedication, warmth and commitment touched the lives of so many. For many years, Barbara served as Team Manager for the City of Leeds Swimming Club, giving countless hours of her time to support swimmers, coaches and families. Her unwavering dedication, organisational skills and caring nature helped generations of young athletes achieve their goals both in and out of the pool.  Many will remember Barbara from her time running the club shop on a Monday night at the old International Pool in Leeds and also up until recently at the John Charles Aquatics Centre. Barbara’s contribution to swimming extended far beyond Leeds. She proudly represented British swimming on the international stage, serving as Assistant Team Manager at the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 and Team Manager at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. She was also Team Manager for England at the 1994 Commonwealth Games and became the first female national squad Team Manager in 1996. Her achievements and tireless service to the sport were recognised when she was awarded the MBE for her outstanding contribution to swimming. (City of Leeds Swimming Club⁠) Barbara was far more than a team manager; she was a friend, mentor and constant source of encouragement. Her presence at competitions and club events brought reassurance and positivity, and her contribution to swimming in Leeds leaves a lasting legacy. She will be remembered with great affection and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside her. Our thoughts are with Barbara’s family, friends and everyone whose lives she enriched. The celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on Tuesday 16 June at 4.00pm at Cottingley Crematorium. The funeral cortège will pass the John Charles Centre for Sport at approximately 3.30pm and Elland Road at approximately 3.45pm. It is not necessary to wear black, and flowers are welcome. Refreshments and food will be available afterwards at The Commercial Inn, Methley. Chris and Jane have asked that this information be shared with anyone who may wish to pay their respects and who may not yet have received these details. Rest in peace, Barbara. Your dedication, kindness and service to swimming will never be forgotten, and your legacy will continue through the countless lives you touched.

- [Aquatics GB Swimming Championships 2026](https://www.swimleeds.org.uk/aquatics-gb-swimming-championships-2026/): City of Leeds was proudly represented by 20 senior swimmers at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, held at the London Aquatics Centre, the premier domestic meet featuring the very best of British swimming. With Olympic medallists and world finalists such as Adam Peaty and Duncan Scott in the field, qualification alone is a significant achievement. For City of Leeds to have 20 athletes earn their place on the start list is a clear reflection of the programme’s strength, depth, and consistency at the highest level. Notably, Emily England-Hall and Grace O’Hara were the club’s youngest qualifiers, both just 13 years old, racing as 14s with open-age qualifying times. To reach a senior national championships under those conditions is an outstanding achievement and underlines the strength of the club’s emerging talent.

After win­ning the White Rose leg of the com­pe­ti­tion and qual­i­fy­ing for the final our swim­mers came out the strongest and were crowned the Nation­al Junior League cham­pi­ons for the sev­enth time in a row. Leeds holds the record for the longest streak of wins in the com­pe­ti­tion since it start­ed in 1979. It cer­tain­ly was an excit­ing after­noon with lots of fast rac­ing and fun. The result was a recipe of great swim­ming and sup­port from the bal­cony. City of Leeds came out on top with 30 first place fin­ish­es. An excel­lent team effort WELL DONE!

I start­ed swim­ming lessons with school at my local pool. At one ses­sion, a City of Leeds Swim­ming Club coach attend­ed and observed every­one. I was invit­ed to a tri­al for a place in the Stage 8 Group, was accept­ed and I began train­ing 3 times a week on evenings and com­pet­ed in short races at Devel­op­ment Galas every now and again.
